Developed out of necessity! I have been building Lycoming 6-cylinder engines for many years and one item has become very difficult to find in the last few years—a quality cold air induction sump system. So I set out to find an exceptional machine shop to develop my own version. The Gryphon Cold Air Sump fits a parallel or angle version of the Lycoming 540/580 6-cylinder engines.  We start with the rear-facing sump off the turbo Lycoming engine and machine it down. This allows a 12-quart oil capacity and all original galleries and access ports. We then built a cold air sump and steel tubes that bolt up to your engine without any modifications. I can gain 1.8-2.0 inches of manifold pressure over ambient and even more than the original rear entry sump on a Glasair 300-hp engine installation.  One aspect that was very important during the development was making the entire package fit perfectly over the Glasair III nose gear and engine mount. If it fits nicely in a G3, it will fit any airframe with a 6-cylinder Lycoming installed.
